ANCHORAGE– Apache Corp. and Cook Inlet Region, Inc. (CIRI) have announced an agreement to explore for oil and natural gas on the native corporation’s acreage in the Cook Inlet Basin of Alaska.

The agreement brings Apache’s Cook Inlet holdings to more than 1 million acres onshore, in tidal areas and offshore leased from private mineral owners, the state of Alaska, the Alaska Mental Health Trust and CIRI. Apache currently is acquiring and evaluating new 3-D seismic and plans to drill its first well in the area later in 2012.

Apache says its seismic acquisition program employs the industry’s first true cable-free wireless seismic technology in order to limit disturbance of communities, wildlife and the environment in the Cook Inlet area. The company says it has worked closely with scientists, stakeholders, and government agencies to obtain several permits that enable Apache to conduct seismic operations in the area while minimizing the impact on marine mammals and other wildlife.
