OSLO, Norway – Statoil (OSE:STL;NYSE:STO) has drilled a rare dry hole with its latest near-field wildcat in the Norwegian North Sea.

The semisubmersibleOcean Vanguard drilled well 34/7-35 S in 265 m (869 ft) of water in production license 552, about 4 km (2.5 mi) east of Tordis.

According to the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate, the aim was to prove petroleum in Upper and Middle Jurassic reservoir rocks (sandstones in the Draupne formation and the Brent group).

This was the first well on the license, awarded under Norway’s APA 2009 round.
