BUENOS AIRES, Argentina –Argentina has declared illegal the oil and gas exploration of the Falkland Islands and says that legal measures may be taken.

The Energy Secretariat said that Desire Petroleum Plc (DES.LN), Rockhopper Exploration Plc (RKH.LN), Argos Resources Ltd. (AORGF, ARG.LN), Borders & Southern Petroleum Plc (BOR.LN), and Falkland Oil & Gas Ltd. (FOGL.LN) do not have valid permits to explore in Argentine waters, according to a Dow Jones report.

The Falklands are under UK control, but Argentina has claimed sovereignty over the area based on proximity.

Dow says the UK will not negotiate regarding the sovereignty unless those on the islands request talks.
