GALVESTON, Texas– Shell Offshore Inc. has contracted LoneStar Marine Shelters to fabricate the 607-ton (551-metric ton), 76-bed auxiliary living quarters for the Mars A expansion in the Gulf of Mexico.

The Mars A TLP, located in Mississippi Canyon block 807, is being expanded to provide additional living and office space for the offshore personnel. The new USCG-certified, single lift, three-level structure measures 72 ft X 40 ft X 45 ft (22 m X 12 m X 14 m).

The structure is engineered around four ultra‐heavy plate girders designed to support a temporary 230-ton (209-metric ton) offshore crane, which will be bolted on to the roof of the building upon integration with the platform. EDG Consulting Engineers Inc. designed the complex.

The transit to the Mars A TLP is scheduled for 3Q 2012.
