ABB to supply propulsion, electric power to new deepwater pipelay vessels

 ZURICH, Switzerland – Daewoo has contracted ABB to supply $18 million in propulsion and electric power systems for two newbuild offshore pipelay vessels ordered by Technip and Odebrecht Oil & Gas for use offshore Brazil for Petrobras.

 The new Wärtsila VA 4146 PLV design vessels will have solid tension capacity of 550 metric tons (606 tons) and will be used to connect subsea wells to floating production installations in water to 2,500 m (8,202 ft.) deep.

 ABB will supply drives, motors and generators, medium voltage switchgear, transformers, and softstarters that will provide propulsion and a power distribution system on board. The two identical vessels are to be delivered in 2014.
