KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – Petronas has signed a heads of agreement (HOA) with Total for joint study into the potential of the K5 gas field offshore Sarawak.

K5, discovered in 1970 in 80 m (262 ft) of water, 230 km (143 mi) from Bintulu, is a sour gas field with up to 70% carbon dioxide (CO2) content.

Currently, no fields are under development in Malaysia with a CO2 content greater than 50%.

Petronas’ new Exploration and Production Technology Centre and Total will investigate development methods that are technically, commercially, and environmentally acceptable.

Additionally, the program will assess CO2 management technologies such as carbon capture, transportation, and sequestration.  The study should take 15 months to complete.
