PAPENDRECHT, the Netherlands – Saipem has issued Royal Boskalis Westminster a letter of award concerning support services for the Ichthys gas export pipeline project off northern Australia.
INPEX is the development operator, and Boskalis will work on behalf ofSaipem (Portugal) Comércio Marítimo. The value of the contract to Boskalis is around €200 million ($262.5 million).
Saipem will install a 42-in. (1.06-m) deepwater gas pipeline from the Ichthys field in the Browse basin 880 km (547 mi) to the reception base at Darwin. The pipeline will run through the Darwin harbor, and will requiring dredging services in the near shore area, rock installation, and the construction of a landfall.
Boskalis’ scope entails dredging an 18-km (11-mi) trench for the gas pipeline, a pipe-pull over a distance of roughly 3,000 m (9,842 ft), and installation of a protective layer of rock after the pipeline is in.
A cofferdam and winch platform will be constructed at the waterline edge to build the landfall. Work is due to start in mid-2013 and should be completed by mid-2015.
Boskalis will deploy two backhoe dredging vessels for the pipeline trenching and landfall construction. Rock for the post-lay installation will be supplied from a local quarry and will be placed using side stone dumping vessels.
SMIT Subsea will also be involved in the project.
