CALGARY, Canada – Sterling Resources Netherlands appears to have encountered oil with an appraisal well in the Dutch North Sea.

Well F17-09 was drilled in block F17a. After reaching MD of 2,200 m (7,218 ft), analysis suggests it intersected a 10-m (33-ft) gross oil interval through interbedded sands within the Jurassic Schieland formation with average porosities of 24%.

Results indicate a higher than anticipated oil/water contact at around 2,000 m (6,561 ft), although this is similar to the contact level observed in previous wells in nearby compartments. It suggests communication with the previously drilled F17-3 well, with an up-dip potential oil column of up to 120 m (394 ft).

The well is being P&A’d without testing.

According to Stephen Birrell, Sterling’s VP and general manager, the well has improved the company’s understanding of the trapping mechanism. “This will be important as we consider how to optimally develop this discovery as part of a greaterF-Quad development, which also includes the F17-4, F18 discoveries and related exploration prospects,” he said.

“A number of development options are currently being worked on, along with the review of potential further appraisal drilling in the area.”
