ABERDEEN, UK – LUX Assure has launched OMMICA, a detection kit designed for use offshore or onshore to assess volumes of methanol or monoethylene glycol (MEG) in oil or water.

The equipment has been tested in the North Sea, and LUX says various operators in Africa, Australia and Europe have already adopted the technology.

Methanol and MEG can cause problems during hydrocarbon processing and can lead to discounted pricing. Traditionally, LUX says, chemicals are monitored via more complex methods – OMMICA, it claims, offers a much simpler approach.

The equipment was initially funded and trialled by a North Sea operator seeking a quick and simple method to monitor methanol and MEG in oil offshore. Development was supported by a grant from the Scottish government.
