Lundin Petroleum says itsBertam-2 appraisal well off peninsular Malaysia has confirmed the field’s potential as an oil producer.

The jackupOffshore Courageous drilled the well in the PM307 PSC area to a TD of 1,884 m (6,181 ft). It was designed to appraise and test Oligocene lower coastal plain sandstones.

The Bertam-1 well drilled in 1995 discovered oil in the K10 sandstone reservoir, and flowed 624 b/d of 34°API crude during a short production test.

Bertam-2 proved the continuity and quality of the K10 oil reservoir sandstone northeast of Bertam-1. The deeper sands housing the secondary exploration were water-bearing.

Lundin’s early analysis suggests an oil interval with good reservoir properties. During a test, the well achieved a stabilized flow rate of 756 b/d of oil. It was then plugged and abandoned and the rig demobilized.

Ashley Heppenstall, president and CEO of Lundin, said: “Bertam-2 is the fifth and final well in Lundin Petroleum's 2011 Malaysia exploration drilling campaign. I am pleased that four of the five wells drilled in our initial campaign have encountered hydrocarbons.

“Bertam is a potentially commercial oil field and we will undertake immediate studies to determine the range of oil resources with a view to rapidly selecting a concept and moving forward towards development or planning further appraisal if required.”
