ABERDEEN, UK – The semisub Transocean Winner has spudded a well on the T-Rex prospect in the Halten Terrace region of the Norwegian Sea.
T-Rex is in blocks 6506/12, 6406/2&3 (part), close to the producing Smørbukk fields. The well is operated by Maersk Oil, in partnership with Faroe Petroleum.
In the same area, Faroe participated in last year’s Fogelberg and Maria discoveries.
Main targets in the current 6406/3-9 well are lower Cretaceous sandstones of the Lange and Lysing formation, which previously tested and flowed oil in thin sand intervals in well 6506/11-2, drilled by Statoil in 1991, at the edge of the prospect.
The sands are expected to improve in thickness and properties down-dip over the T-Rex prospect. Drilling should be completed early in 2012.
Faroe was awarded the T-Rex license under Norway’s 2006 APA (Awards in Predefined Areas) licensing round.
Drilling also continues on the sidetrack to the recent Centrica-operated Butch discovery, where Faroe is also a partner. The aim is to appraise for additional volumes of oil further down the large salt-induced structure, in an attempt to pinpoint the oil water contact.
In December Faroe expects to participate in the Kalvklumpen exploration well offshore Norway.
