OSLO, Norway – Electromagnetic Geoservices (EMGS) is preparing to start a multi-client 3D magnetotelluric (MT) survey covering 3,000 sq km (1,158 sq mi) in the Møre basin of the Norwegian Sea.

The project has prior funding from a major operator.

EMGS will equip the rig EM Express (ex-OHM Express) to perform the work on a one-month charter.

MT employs natural signals generated from the interaction between the solar wind and the Earth's magnetic field.

Aslak Myklebostad, EMGS president, Multi-Client Eastern Hemisphere, said: "We have been pioneering the use of MT methods for understanding basin-scale geology, particularly where basalt or salt make the interpretation of other geophysical data challenging.

“The key objective of this MT survey is to determine the thickness of basalt layers and whether there are sediments below."

Processed data should be available early next year, and 3D inverted data during 2Q 2012.
