LONDON – Serica Energy has secured exploration interests in the Luderitz basin offshore Namibia.
The Namibian Ministry of Mines and Energy awarded subsidiary company Serica Energy Namibia 85% of a Petroleum Agreement covering four large blocks and part blocks.
Other partners are The National Petroleum Corp. of Namibia (NAMCOR) and Indigenous Energy.
According to Serica, the Luderitz basin is one of three under-explored sedimentary basins south of the Walvis Ridge.
The award comprises blocks 2512A, 2513A, 2513B, and 2612A (part) in the center of the basin and covers an area of roughly 17,400 sq km (6,718 sq mi). Existing seismic points to large four-way dip closed structures in the undrilled deepwater parts of the license area, with potential for trapping mechanisms in stratigraphic pinch outs toward the shelf margin.
During the initial four-year exploration period, Serica will acquire extensive 3D seismic and reprocess existing 2D data. The first well could be drilled in the third or fourth year of the initial period.
