MEADOW MILL, UKArc Energy Resources has completed a contract that involved cladding control valves for Saudi Aramco’s Manifa field development in Saudi Arabia.

Weld overlay cladding enabled Severn Glocon to lessen the cost associated with casting of corrosion-resistant alloy valves, the conventional technique for protecting these items from sour, corrosive gases such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S).

Arc provided cladding of all internal wetted areas of 24 globe valves ranging from 6 to 24-in. (15-61-cm) in diameter with a 4-mm thick, metallically bonded layer of a corrosion-resistant nickel-based alloy.

The largest of the valves, four 24-in. units each weighing 12 metric tons (13 tons), were among the first to be clad on two new rotating-head welding machines that Arc took delivery of last year.

These are designed to manipulate the welding head around the fixed globe valve, positioning the head to apply the overlay accurately to the complex cast geometries.

Arc also worked with Severn Glocon engineers to develop a geometry that was suitable for cladding, and produced bespoke tooling to handle the various sizes of valves and to meet the varied access requirements.
