Total makes gas discovery in Caspian Sea

PARIS – Total has discovered gas in the Caspian Sea in the Absheron block offshore Azerbaijan.

The Absheron X-2 well has encountered more than 500 ft (152 m) of cumulated net gas pays within high quality sands on the northern flank of a major 270 sq km (104 sq mi) structure.

The well’s first results confirm a potential of several tcf of gas and associated condensates. The well is currently at a depth of about 6,550 m (21,489 ft).

The Absheron discovery is located in 500 m (1,640 ft) of water, 100 km (62 mi) southeast of Baku, some 25 km (16 mi) northeast of the Shah Deniz gas and condensate field.

Total subsidiary, Total EP Absheron is the operator with 40% equity. The partners are SOCAR (40%) and GDF Suez (20%).
