BARCELONA, Spain – Repsol and the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) have opened a new seismic imaging facility, the Repsol–BSC Research Center.
Since 2007 Repsol/BSC have collaborated on R&D in seismic imaging for hydrocarbon exploration.
The new center, which currently has 211 researchers, will continue projects already under way and tackle new ones in areas such as deposit modeling and subsoil fluids monitoring.
One of its projects will be the continuation of the Kaleidoscope project, where the focus will be on generation and interpretation of subsoil images by seismic and electromagnetic methods.
Kaleidoscope uses a new generation of processors capable of processing complex mathematical algorithms.
Repsol claims the technology allows it to process information 15 times faster than its competitors, and improves the reliability of seismic images, increasing the chance of finding oil and gas in the deep subsurface.
Some of the data has been applied in deepwater exploration in the Gulf of Mexico and offshore Brazil.
Kaleidoscope has been named one of the five most innovative projects in the world by the American Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers.
