STOCKHOLM, Sweden – Lundin Petroleum has plugged and abandoned its latest exploration well off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia as a dry hole.
The Batu Hitam-1 well, drilled in the eastern part of block PM308A, was designed to test the hydrocarbon potential of a large basement high structure block. The targets were Oligocene sandstones in a four-way dip closure and fractured pre-Tertiary basement in the underlying horst block.
Target Oligocene sandstones were present with good reservoir quality containing gas with high concentrations of carbon dioxide.
The Offshore Courageous rig will next head 47 km (29 mi) north to drill the Janglau-1 prospect, testing a new play concept in an independent sub-basin in the same block.
Lundin Malaysia has a 35% operating interest in PM308A, in partnership with JX Nippon Oil & Gas Exploration (Peninsular Malaysia) and PETRONAS Carigali.
