STAVANGER, Norway – OMV has discovered gas in the Chamonix prospect in the Norwegian Sea, according to partner Noreco. Well 6407/5-2S was drilled in license PL471.

The aims were to prove hydrocarbons in Chamonix, a stratigraphic trap in the Upper Cretaceous Lysing formation, and in Cortina, a target in the Jurassic. Noreco says the Lysing sands were tight, but in the Jurassic Rogn and Garn formations the well proved gas with a gross column of around 40 m (131 ft).

Data acquisition has been performed including coring and sampling, and the results should help de-risk similar nearby prospects.

The partners will evaluate the possibilities for a tieback of the discovery to infrastructure in the area.
