Wilphoenix spuds WoS well for Faroe

ABERDEEN, UK -- Drilling has started on the Faroe Petroleum-operated Fulla prospect west of Shetland.

The Awilco semisub Wilphonenix is drilling the well in 120 m (393 ft) water depth in license P.1161, north east of BP’s Clair oil field, targeting potentially oil-bearing Devonian Clair reservoir sands at a depth of 2,100 m (6,889 ft). If the Fulla well achieves its targets, an oil sample will be extracted using advanced wire-line technology.

The license also contains the Freya oil discovery, drilled by Mobil in 1980, which encountered 140 m (459 ft) of oil-bearing Devonian Clair reservoir sands.

Faroe is considering a combined standalone development of Freya and Fulla.

Last December the company farmed out 50% of P.1161 to Canadian Overseas Petroleum, with the latter agreeing to pay 60% of the estimated costs of the Fulla well.

Faroe’s next scheduled next exploration wells, all offshore Norway, will be on the Butch, T-Rex, and Kalvklumpen prospects, and are expected to spud in 3Q and 4Q 2011.
