MOSCOW – LUKOIL Overseas has acquired a 49% interest from ORANTO Petroleum in a tract off Sierra Leone.

The agreed exploration program for the SL-5-11 offshore block calls for drilling of one exploration well before 2013.

SL-5-11 covers an area of 4,022 sq km (1,553 sq mi), with water depths varying from 100 m (328 ft) to 3.3 km (2 mi). The block is part of the Sierra Leone - Liberia geological basin.

Lukoil says 2D and 3D seismic surveys have been conducted over the block, revealing several promising structures.
