OSLO, Norway – Subsea production on the Norwegian Continental Shelf has overtaken output from platform wells, according to the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate.
NPD bases its findings on production data from Norwegian fields in 2010.
Nearly 131.3 MMcmoe were produced during the year from subsea wells compared with 125.4 MMcmoe from platform wells.
Increased gas output gas was responsible, particularly from large gas producers such as the Troll field in the North Sea and Ormen Lange and Åsgard in the Norwegian Sea, with their extensive subsea facilities.
Over the past decade, NPD adds, subsea well numbers have been increasing, with technology advances allowing many small reservoirs to be developed via subsea facilities when a fixed platform would not have been commercially viable.
