DOHA, Qatar -- Qatar Petroleum and Shell’s Pearl gas-to-liquids (GTL) plant in Ras Laffan Industrial City, Qatar, has sold its first commercial shipment of GTL Gasoil.
Over the next few months, production will ramp up from the first Pearl GTL train, with the second train due to start up before end-2011. The plant should reach full production capacity by mid-2012.
When fully operational, Pearl GTL should produce 1.6 bcf/d of gas from the North field, which will be processed to deliver 120,000 b/d of condensate, LPG and ethane, and 140,000 b/d of GTL products.
Shell operates the Pearl GTL plant which was developed under a production-sharing agreement with the government of Qatar.
Gas began flowing from wells 60 km (37 mi) offshore this March, after which the gas processing plant began producing condensate, LPG and sulfur, while four of what are claimed to be the world’s largest air separation units started producing oxygen.
The GTL plant, which employs Shell proprietary technology, entered production in May, converting the gas and oxygen to GTL wax. In the last step of the process, the waxes are cracked and distilled into finished GTL products.
