HOUSTON– Cummins Inc. announced today at the 2011 Offshore Technology Conference that it has opened a land-based Oil and Gas Center of Excellence in Houston with an Offshore Oil and Gas Center of Excellence in Singapore.
The 70,000-sq.-ft. (6,503-sq. m) Houston center is on six acres, and features office and meeting spaces, assembly cells, a paint booth, and two test cells sized for up to a 78-l (4,760 cu in) engine. The two test cells with AVL instrumentation and testing system can support both engineering and production testing, and testing of mechanical or electrical drive systems up to 3,500 hp (2,610 kW). The test facility can condition the intake air up to 50° C (122° F) for high ambient temperature testing, as well as supporting standard 23° C (73° F) test conditions. All data is stored through a high-speed data acquisition system that ties directly into Cummins global test database.
At the same time, Cummins announced that its QSK series of 19-60 liter engines for oil and gas applications will move to meet EPA’s Tier 4 Final 2015 off-highway emissions limits by combining clean-in-cylinder combustion and integrated Selective Catalytic Reduction aftertreatment. The SCR clean exhaust technology was revealed at the opening of the Cummins Oil and Gas Center of Excellence located in Houston.
Cummins SCR clean exhaust system reduces oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions to 3.5 g/kW-hr for Tier 4 Final off-highway, a more than 40% reduction from the Tier 2 level. Particulate matter emissions are reduced by 80% to meet the 0.04 g/kW-hr level for Tier 4 Final. This is achieved by a clean-combustion formula utilizing higher pressure fuel injection and enhancements to the power cylinder design.
