OSLO, Norway -- The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate will acquire 2D seismic this summer over the waters around Jan Mayen off northwest Norway.

The program will start around June 10 and last up to three months. PGS’ R.V. Harrier Explorer will acquire the data using Geostreamer.

This is a new technique in which the streamer – in this case 8 km (4.9 mi) long – is towed deeper in the water than is usual with conventional seismic acquisition. It allows the streamer to withstand higher waves, making acquisition activity less weather-dependent and therefore more efficient.

Late last year, Norway’s government committed to an impact assessment of the maritime zones off Jan Mayen, ahead of future petroleum activity. The 2D campaign forms part of this impact assessment, and further seismic data acquisition is planned in the area next summer.
