OSLO, Norway -- Nexen Exploration Norge has plugged and abandoned an exploration well in the Norwegian Sea as a dry hole.
Well 6507/8-8 was drilled by the Songa Delta in production license 434, 7 km (4.35 mi) southeast of the Statoil-operated Heidrun field. The aim was to prove petroleum in lower Jurassic reservoir rocks (Tilje, Åre formations). According to the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate, reservoir rocks of expected thickness and of good quality were encountered in both formations.
This is the first well drilled on the license, awarded under Norway’s APA 2006 round. It was drilled in 329 m (1,079 ft) of water to a vertical depth of 2,525 m (8,284 ft) below sea level.
Songa Delta will transfer to PL 378 in the North Sea to drill appraisal well 35/12-4 for operator Wintershall Norge.
