AMSTERDAM, the Netherlands – Smith Bits has released its Spear shale-optimized steel body polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) bit. The design is to drill a curve and long lateral hole at higher penetration rates in low hydraulic energy environments.

“…improved directional control allows for the realization of complex well trajectories,” said Guy Arrington, president, Smith Bits, at the release. “Since the bit is capable of drilling both curve and lateral sections, it reduces the number of trips downhole and the associated rig time.”

The bit combines an optimized steel body with tall, thin blades for a larger cuttings flow area. The hydraulic design directs flow toward the cutter faces to keep them sharp and to sweep cuttings away, said Smith.
