DOHA, Qatar -- Maersk Oil has agreed a long-term collaboration with Dutch research association TNO to jointly develop new technologies for increased oil recovery (IOR).
Their focus will be on drilling long horizontal wells, integrated operations, and production optimization. The joint program will be based at the Qatar Science and Technology Park in Doha where both Maersk and TNO have research centers. Maersk is investing $100 million in its facility.
“Mastering increased and enhanced oil recovery is key to unlocking future hydrocarbons in tight reservoirs,” said Lewis Affleck, managing director of Maersk Oil Qatar. “Our state-of-the art research center forms the base for our efforts to better understand the opportunities and limitations in the [offshore] Al Shaheen field. This enlarged insight into the reservoirs will enable us to optimize our production while providing sustainable long-term benefits to the Qatari people.”
“Development of new technologies asks for combining a thorough understanding of the industry with science and technology,” said Anton Leemhuis, managing director, Qatar branch TNO. “TNO has successfully been doing this together with major international oil companies, for example, by developing and implementing intelligent production monitoring and control systems that optimize field production.”
