STAVANGER, Norway -- Statoil has drawn a blank with a deepwater exploration well on the Kiwi prospect in the El Dabaa license (block 9) off northern Egypt.
The drillshipDiscoverer Americas will now head west to the Gulf of Mexico.
The well was drilled in 2,700 m (8,858 ft) of water in the Mediterranean Sea, west of the Nile Delta. Statoil says extensive logging has been performed, but preliminary results show the well was dry.
Results will be further evaluated and integrated into data on the area before any new decisions are made about the acreage.
Statoil operates El Dabaa with an 80% interest, in partnership with Sonatrach International Petroleum E&P. It has been in the concession since 2007, when it was also awarded the deepwater Ras El Hekma permit. The two concessions cover respectively 8,368 and 9,802 sq km (3,231 and 3,784 sq mi).
