DUBAI, UAE – Drydocks World has delivered the country’s first offshore rig to the National Drilling Co. of Abu Dhabi. The delivery follows refurbishment and upgrades to the rig, which had been in service since its acquisition by NDC in 1975.

The Al Ittihad (The Union) was repaired under NDC’s Rig Integrity Assurance Program. Originally built by Marathon LeTourneau in Clydebank, Scotland, the rig’s service life is expected to be extended by 15-25 years.

Al Ittihad is equipped to drill to 20,000 ft (6,096 m) in waters 150 ft (45 m) deep.

“The National Drilling Co. is an honored client of Drydocks World and we are privileged to have been chosen to carry out repair works on Al Ittihad, a drilling rig that has historical significance in the UAE,” said Khamis Juma Buamin, chairman, Drydocks and Maritime World. “Our capabilities as conversion and construction experts were put to the full test by this project and we have emerged successful and delivered it on a special occasion. It is a testimony to the capabilities of our staff and Drydocks World’s position as the preferred ship repair yard in the region and beyond.”
