PERTH, Western Australia – Shell reports receipt of approval from the Australian government to move forward with the world’s first floating LNG plant. The Prelude project is 200 km (120 mi) offshore Western Australia.

The project has “strict conditions” and must comply with specific requirements to protect the marine ecosystem and minimize the risk of oil spills, according to Australian Environment Minister Tony Burke.

Prelude is in the engineering and design phase at Shell and will use the world’s largest vessel as its FLNG base.
