DAR-ES-SALAAM, Tanzania -- BG Group has discovered gas with its first deepwater exploration well off Tanzania.

The Pweza-1 well in Block 4, drilled in 1,400 m (4,593 ft) of water, 85 km (53 mi) offshore southern Tanzania, revealed the presence of a working hydrocarbon system after encountering gas-bearing sands.

In May, BG won consent from the government of the United Republic of Tanzania to farm-in to offshore interests held by operator Ophir Energy in Blocks 1, 3, and 4 of the Mafia Deep Offshore Basin and the northern part of the Ruvuma Basin.

Pweza-1 is the first of a three-well program planned for Blocks 1, 3, and 4. Work obligations include the acquisition of 4 000 sq km (1,544 sq mi) of 3D seismic data.
BG has the option to assume operatorship of all three blocks on completion of the initial work program.
