SAN DONATO MILANESE, Italy -- Eni and Sonangol say their latest oil discovery in block 15/06, offshore Angola exceeded expectations.

The Cabaca South-East 1 well, drilled 100 km (62 mi) from the coast, reached its multi-target objective in the deepest Miocene levels, encountering oil-bearing reservoirs with a total of 450 m (1,476 ft) gross thickness.

Early evaluations suggest “material volumes of oil in place of high quality”, according to Eni.

This was the seventh of eight commitment exploration wells on the license. Eni adds that the result confirms the potential for a second productive hub in the northeastern area of the block.

Current engineering studies and activities prior to the development of the West Hub will guide East Hub, which Eni believes will double production from block 15/06.

The company operates the block with a 35% interest, in partnership with Sonangol Pesquisa e Produção (15%), SSI Fifteen (20%), Total (15%), Falcon Oil Holding Angola (5%), Petrobras International Braspetro (5%), and Statoil Angola Block 15/06 Award (5%).
