RIO DE JANEIRO -- Petrobras has discovered further oil in pre-salt reservoirs in the Campos basin offshore Brazil. Well 6-ABL-57D-RJS was drilled in the Albacora Leste field concession area, below the field’s productive sandstone layer.

The discovery is 130 km (81 mi) off the coast of Rio de Janeiro, in a water depth of 1,956 m (6,417 ft) and at a total subsurface depth of 4,536 m (14,882 ft).

Petrobras’ preliminary analysis suggests a good-quality, light oil. Further drilling will be needed to assess the volumes, extent, and productivity of the reservoirs, and also the potential for development via existing production and offloading infrastructure.

The company operates the Albacora Leste field in partnership with Repsol (10%).
