ABERDEEN -- Moorings/fluid transfer specialist Sigma Offshore has secured a total of $6.1m in funding from National Oilwell Varco (NOV), Scottish Enterprise’s Scottish Venture Fund (SVF) and venture capital firm, Energy Ventures.

The new capital will allow Sigma to pursue development of its Smart Mooring System (SMS) and its other mobile production solutions.

It describes SMS as a cost-efficient external turret and fluid transfer system providing unlimited weathervaning capability for oil and gas vessels. Other benefits include the ability to operate in harsh environments, efficient connect/reconnect systems, minimal invasion into the ship’s hull, and low maintenance costs.

Sigma says a bespoke SMS can cost from $15.3-$46 million or more, compared with $38.1-$76.3 million for competing systems.

The company is targeting the SMS at projects in the Gulf of Mexico, South America, West and North Africa, the North Sea, South East Asia and offshore Australia.

Recently, Sigma appointed Allan Millmaker as Executive Vice President Business Development in Houston, while Vice-President Business Development, Eirik Refstie, heads up the company’s Oslo office.

The company also provides extended well test systems, floating production export system solutions, subsea solutions and project management.
