ASHKABAD -- RWE Dea has opened its new division in Turkmenistan, trading as RWE Dea AG, Turkmenistan Branch.

Last year, RWE Dea gained exploration rights for the License Block 23 under a production sharing agreement. The block is in the southeast (Turkmen) sector of the Caspian Sea and extends over an area of around 940 sq km (363 sq mi).

RWE Dea is currently putting together a comprehensive study to provide a record of the natural environment in its current state, and describe environmental protection measures to be implemented during all stages of the work program. After evaluating existing seismic data, the company will conduct a 3D seismic survey over an area of about 400 sq km (154 sq mi), prior to drilling of an exploration well.

The company plans to transfer its experience regarding developing oil through the Mittelplatte drilling and production island in the shallow water Wattenmeer tidelands off northern Germany. Operations here have been incident-free for more than 22 years, the company claims.

To foster the exchange of know-how within the scope of the PSC, the company will stage regular training courses in Germany for specialist from Turkmenistan's gas and oil industry. These courses will focus on the general legal environment and energy industry in Europe, and the legal and contractual system in the upstream sector.
