ABERDEEN -- Dana Petroleum has discovered gas in its Platypus prospect in the UK southern North Sea. Preliminary analysis suggests reserves are in line with pre-drill estimates of roughly 130 bcf.
Well 48/1a-5 was drilled in a water depth of around 142 ft (43 m) to a total measured depth of 11,048 ft (3,367 m), targeting a Rotliegend age, Lower Leman prospect. The well encountered 218 vertical ft (66 m) of gas bearing sands: currently wireline log data is being acquired over the reservoir section.
Following completion of logging, a multi-rate drill stem test will be performed. The well data-set will then be analyzed and development options assessed.
The Leman is the major producing reservoir in the southern sector - Dana already produces gas from this reservoir horizon at the Johnston, Victor, and Anglia fields. Leman is also the reservoir in the Babbage field in the same region, where Dana is a partner in a current development that should flow first gas in mid-2010.
