SANDNES, Norway -- Eni Norge has contracted ABB in Sweden to supply a subsea power cable for its Goliat development in the Barents Sea.

The cable will be the longest and most powerful of its kind ever delivered for an offshore application, Eni claims, with a capacity of 75 MW. It will convey electricity directly to the Goliat Sevan 1000 FPSO via a connection to Norway’s onshore grid. It should bring a 50% reduction in CO2 emissions, Eni adds, compared with a conventional solution based solely on power generation offshore.

Initially, power transmitted to the FPSO will be significantly less than the available cable capacity. However, the selected cable provides for flexibility and potential use of the Goliat FPSO at a later date as a tie-in and processing hub for nearby discoveries.

ABB recently provided a similar high-voltage AC cable to another development project offshore Norway, and plans to use this experience to optimize the Goliat design. The $113-million contract will involve engineering, procurement, construction and installation, with marine installation work due to be performed in summer 2013.

Goliat is in production licenses PL 229. The field will be operated from Hammerfest in northern Norway, with first oil scheduled for late 2013.
