STAVANGER -- Centrica Resources Norge has started drilling the Fogelberg prospect in the Norwegian Sea.

The semisub West Alpha is drilling the well in license PL433, an operation expected to take around 80 days. Partners in the well are Petro-Canada Norge, E.ON Ruhrgas Norge, Faroe Petroleum, and North Energy AS.

Fogelberg is a substantial oil prospect, located 10 km (6.2 mi) north of the Åsgard oil field (Smørbukk deposit). Geologically it is similar to Statoil’s Morvin oil and gas discovery, 10 km to the south west, expected to come on stream towards year-end. Well 6506/9-2 S will be drilled in a rotated fault block on the Halten terrace north of Åsgard.

According to Faroe’s Chief Executive Graham Stewart, Fogelberg is the first of two wells on the company’s line-up in the Norwegian Sea this year. The second will be the Wintershall-operated Maria appraisal well (Faroe 30%), due to spud this spring.

It will also participate in three deepwater Atlantic margin exploration wells on large oil prospects, namely Anne Marie off the Faroe Islands (operated by Eni); and Cardhu (operated by BP) and Lagavulin (Chevron), both West of Shetland.
