ABERDEEN -- Scott Process Technology has awarded Scotoil Services a contract to establish a pilot plant for the land-based disposal of oilfield scale.
The new plant will be on a semi-commercial scale and will allow Scotoil Services to test and approve the new technology, prior to construction of the full-size plant. The pilot plant is due to go into operation later this year, with work on construction of the full-size plant scheduled for 2010.
Oilfield scale results from the injection of seawater into oil reservoirs to lift the oil to the surface. The process causes naturally occurring mineral salts to come out of solution as scale. This can build up to the point where oilfield equipment is rendered unusable.
“Scale removal is an essential service for the North Sea oil and gas industry,” says Gordon McLellan, MD of Scotoil. “This investment in a new disposal process is to enable Scotoil Services to switch from marine to land-based disposal to meet SEPA’s deadline of October 2011.”
