BUSON -- Samsung Heavy Industries Co. Ltd.'s order backlog has reached $41 billion which is equivalent to 231 ships, its president, J.W. Kim, said today.

This year's orders totalled $19 billion, he said at the naming ceremony ofStena DrillMax, a $640-million ultra deepwater drillship built by Samsung for Stena Drilling Group.

Samsung has so far delivered seven deep water drillships and is working on 16 drillships starting with the DrillMax unit. This amounts to 80% share of the world market, he told some 200 invited guests at the naming ceremony at the yard on Geoje island of South Korea.

He said Samsung was commanding 33% of the world LNG tanker building market and 35% of the global ultra large containership building market.

"We have invested in resources for high tech vessels and we will continue to devote our best efforts and maintain our lead in making first class products in these categories," he stressed.
