Statoil aims to boost Barents gas

STAVANGER, Norway --StatoilHydro has clearance from Norway's Petroleum Safety Authority to drill an exploration well in the Barents Seam starting early in November.

The semisubmersiblePolar Pioneer will drill the well on the Askeladd Beta gas field in production license 064. Drilling is expected to take around 44 days.

StatoilHydro plans to use the field's reserves for a proposed new LNG Train 2 on Melkoya Island, currently receiving production from the Snohvit field.

The company also has approval for a well on the Huldra field in North Sea PL 051, using the Seadrill jackupWest Epsilon. If there is a discovery, the well will be converted into a producer. The rig should arrive on location by late October, following a brief stopover at the shipyard in Olen.
