PARIS --Total's board of directors split the function of chairman and chief executive officer in a meeting today. Christophe de Margerie was named CEO and Thierry Desmarest will remain as chairman.

The new CEO is a member of the Total S.A. board and is president of Exploration and Production.

"This demonstrates the Group's ability to promote from within its own talented ranks," says Desmarest. "Christophe de Margerie has been with Total for more than 30 years. We have worked together, sharing a common vision, to build a world-class company endowed with a rich culture and strong ambitions. I know that Christophe will continue to develop Total, mindful of the interests of our employees and shareholders, as well as being attentive to the concerns of our other stakeholders. As for myself, I will stay on as chairman of the board."
