AMSTERDAM -- The BG Group has used a new motor-powered rotary closed-loop drilling system (RCLS) on its Panna field offshore India. This new drilling technology has reduced the company's drilling cost and risk, recovery factor, and production rates, on BG India-operated Panna, according to Jon Ruszka, INTEQ.

In 2005, BG started an infill drilling program to improve the field's reservoir performance. The company determined it best to drill its first wells with RCLS to penetrate the field's thick limestone characteristic.

BG then decided to drill additional infill wells with the motor-powered RCLS, according to Ruszka. Fifteen wells were drilled with this system, resulting in a maximum 150% improved rate of penetration.

Of the 80 total wells drilled on Panna, the last 25 spudded with RCLS currently contributes 50% of the field's production.

Ruszka presented these results today at the SPE/IADC conference in Amsterdam.
