Statoil in Russia spill alliance

STAVANGER, Norway --Statoil has formed a partnership with Murmansk county authorities to improve response to oil spills off northwest Russia. Both parties want a clear plan of action for the region linked to new field developments such as Shtokman.

Murmansk is a transhipment port for loading crude into tankers sailing west to Europe and the US. One of Statoil's main concerns is to safeguard the impact of these and other offshore operations on the Kola Fjord, which leads into the port.

In April, it plans to transfer three upgraded skimmers to Murmansk for training local operators. Statoil has also invested $1.09 million in laboratory equipment for use by the Russians to analyze the characteristics of leaked oil. The Sintef research foundation in Trondheim will co-operate in training Russian technicians to use these facilities.
