HOUSTON -- The MMS has approved the Petrobras-operated Cascade and Chinook development plan, which calls for deployment of the first FPSO in the US Gulf of Mexico.

The development plan was given the green light on Monday by US authorities, said Renato Bertani, president of Petrobras America Inc. on Tuesday during a panel discussion at the Deloitte Oil and Gas Conference in Houston.

Petrobras is fast-tracking development of Cascade and Chinook through a phased approach to achieve first oil in late 2009. The fields are located in the Walker Ridge area in water depths ranging from 2,134-2,743 m (7,000-9,000 ft).
