Chevron hits gas offshore Australia

Chevron Corp. has made a natural gas discovery at its Clio-1 exploration well 90 mi (150km) offshore northwestern Australia in permit WA-205-P.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA -- Chevron Corp. has made a natural gas discovery at its Clio-1 exploration well in permit WA-205-P, 90 mi (150 km) offshore northwestern Australia.

Transocean's semisubmersibleJack Bates completed Clio-1 in September 2006 in 3,150 ft (960 m) water depth to a depth of 15,500 ft (4,725 m).

The well discovered 623 ft (190 m) of net gas sands in the Mungaroo formation to make Clio one of the top wells in Australia in terms of total net pay.

Jay Johnson, managing director of Chevron Australia, said, "Chevron will be undertaking further work, including a 3D seismic survey program starting in mid-December, to better determine the potential of the gas find and subsequent development options."

Chevron affiliates Chevron Australia Pty. Ltd. and Texaco Australia Pty. Ltd. operate permit WA-205-P and hold 67% interest. Shell Development Australia holds 33%.
