(Asia-Pacific) - The Malaysian national oil corporation, Petronas, has made a new gas discovery at the Kanowit-1 well in block SK306 offshore Sarawak.

The well, about 180 km northwest of Bintulu in a water depth of 80 m, was spud on October 25 and reached a final depth of 2,029 m below sea level, Petronas says.

The Kanowit-1 had a significant gas accumulation in a Miocene limestone reservoir, says the company, which has done two production tests with a cumulative flow rate of 72 MMcf/d of gas and 3,400 b/d of condensate, with 5% to 10% carbon dioxide.

It said the pinnacle reef has the potential for development.

Other recently discovered gas fields in the area of the Kanowit are Kumang, F28, and the gas producing F6.
